STUDENT UPDATE

February 3, 2013

The StFXAUT is now entering its second week of job action in support of a new collective agreement. Everything from the picket lines to the support kitchen have run very smoothly, and the resolve and commitment of the AUT members has been very strong.

Friday was capped off with a rally in Chisholm Park that was attended by about 350 AUT members and supporters, including representatives of at least 15 universities in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec. We also welcomed the support of other unions on campus and in the community, and numerous students who walked the line with us.

As a result of this impressive show of solidarity and support, the administration finally responded to our call for negotiations to resume. Informal discussions were held on Thursday and Friday between the AUT and senior administrators, and continued on Sunday afternoon. We expect the administration to table a package to our full negotiating team on Tuesday, February 5.

Our intention remains to get back to the classroom as soon as possible, but we are firm in our belief that what we want in these negotiations will ultimately enrich the student academic experience. We miss you and are grateful for your support and patience.
