STFXAUT CALLS FOR PROVINCIAL CONCILIATOR

PRESS RELEASE

ANTIGONISH (November 15, 2012)

On November 14 at 12:30 pm, the St. Francis Xavier Association of University Teachers (StFXAUT) asked the Ministry of Labour and Advanced Education to appoint a conciliator as contract talks with management have come to a standstill.

After 39 meetings over five months, the StFXAUT sees “little prospect” of making any significant progress at the table without the assistance of a provincial conciliator. According to StFXAUT President Peter McInnis, “The University continues to ignore or reject without negotiation substantive proposals placed on the table by the union. Under these circumstances, the StFXAUT has no alternative but to request the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education to appoint a provincial conciliator to reach a collective agreement in a timely fashion.”

The StFXAUT represents more than 400 academic workers including Full- and Part-time Faculty, Librarians, Lab and Academic Skills Instructors, Clinical Associates, Coady and Extension Staff at St. Francis Xavier University.

Key issues for the union include academic freedom, intellectual property, fair contracts for all members including part-timers, Lab Instructors, and Academic Skills Instructors, access to benefits, and professional development

To date, no further meetings between the StFXAUT and University administration have been scheduled.
